Rich Gen Zs Are Prioritizing Self Care Over Having Kids

The saying goes that youth wears a laurel. Over the years, it has become common knowledge that young people across many generations see that period as the peak of their blossom.

So, it is natural for them to be adventurous and sample all of life’s flavors. However, youths tend to mellow and become reserved as they age.

    A Generation of Self-Prioritizers

One of the many commonalities of youthful years is that adults in this niche prefer to explore instead of starting a family.

This trend is equally true of Gen Zs. However, their preference for adventure over children is governed more by finances than rote. So, when Gen Zs comes off as nonchalant about having kids, their account balance is probably culpable.

Money is the Compass of a Gen Z’s Trajectory

Of course, this trend is not true of every Gen Z. However, research by StoreConnect reveals that income is a major compass of their life choices.

The study found that 43 percent of Gen Zs, who have an annual income of $150,000 or more, tend to save to travel as part of plans to have kids.

Gen Zs With Low Incomes are More Likely to Plan for Child Making

Only 28 percent of these financially stable Gen Zs give having children a thought. Interestingly, the age-long consensus among young people is to wait until they have financial stability before having kids.

Gen Zs with not-so-large incomes seems to think first of having children and starting a family rather than going for cross-border adventures.

Income Seems to Be a Metric of Introspection for Gen Zs

The study found that a significant number (45 percent) of polled Gen Zs were making an annual income of $25,000 and $50,000. However, this same niche starts saving towards family planning earlier than their wealthy counterparts.

Analysis of data from the StoreConnect study suggests that Gen Zs earning low incomes seem to be more aware of the importance of dedicated savings for individuals expecting a baby.

The Rich Are Often More Confident and Less Challant

The analysis is quite reasonable as rich Gen Zs tend not to think much of setting aside a trove in preparation for the arrival of kids. Confidence in their financial stability seems to make this less of a priority.

Another extreme of youthful perspectives among Gen Zs and millennials is the decision not to have kids.

Raising Kids Has Become Super Expensive

These folks would all too often cite how expensive raising kids has become, thanks to the ravaging inflation. Also, student debt, which tends to plague almost every youth of this generation, is another discouraging factor.

Results from yet another study suggest that 60 percent of millennials claim the accompanying costs of raising children are the reason they have avoided that life milestone.

    Various Excuses for Avoiding Child-Making

Another shocking reason cited by some young adults is not wanting to give birth to children who would become victims of the looming climate disaster. However, some youths are forthright enough to confess that all they want is a steady career.

These studies also reveal that fewer women long to have children, as many of them seek out paths of financial independence, even in wedlock.

Financial Experts Speak About Gen Zs and Child Making

Alex Beene is a financial literacy expert who instructs students at the University of Tennessee. Beene opines that the prime mover behind Gen Zs jettisoning the idea of having kids is their personal finance.

Many of them see traveling the world as a far more predictable and achievable financial goal than having kids, in or out of wedlock.

A Trend Not Common to Gen Zs Alone

Beene suggests that the trend is not peculiar to Gen Zs but started with millennials. However, not wanting to have kids is a crisis that seems to be spinning out of control among Gen Zs.

Beene said, “The trend of preferring pets and travels to starting a family is one we’ve seen growing for the past few years, starting with younger millennials and then exploding with Gen Z.”

Gen Zs Want to Change Location as they Get Better Job Offers

Most young people’s greatest assets are their time and expertise. Raising kids could potentially rob Gen Zs of their savings and valuable time, as it’s a venture that requires both financial and filial responsibility.

So, instead of being tied down geographically by a child, they would rather be digital nomads, save, invest, and free up more time for travel.

Gen Zs Are Likely to Come Around

However, irrespective of this prevailing reality, Beene anticipates Gen Zs to mellow in their stance about child making in the near future.

“I think in time many in Gen Z will come around to parenthood as prior generations did, but they have to feel more financially secure in order to do so,” Beene said.
