Walmart is the subject of a $45 million lawsuit, and if it is found guilty of overcharging customers, you might be able to get $500 from a big settlement. The lawsuit was filed against Walmart in late 2022 and updated in 2023.
The lawsuit accused Walmart of overcharging customers for produce sold by weight and in bulk. Specifically, it claimed that Walmart had advertised incorrect weights for items like oranges and grapefruits, leading customers to pay more than they should have because the weights listed were heavier than the actual weight of the items.
The lawsuit argued that customers were tricked into believing they were getting discounts on products like seafood, meat, and poultry. In reality, the prices had not been reduced. Essentially, customers paid more than the lowest advertised prices in the store for these items.
The lawsuit claimed this led to three primary unfair and misleading business practices affecting the customers. These practices include: “Falsely Inflating Product Weight,” “Mislabeling Weight of Bagged Produce,” and “Overcharging of Sold-by-Weight Clearance Products.”

Walmart has agreed to pay $45 million to customers affected by an issue with some of their weighted or bagged products. If you bought any of these products from Walmart between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, you might be eligible to receive up to $500 as compensation.
These stores can be individual shops, large supercenters, or market stores in the United States or Puerto Rico. The amount of money you can get back ranges from $10 to $500. The exact amount depends on how much produce you bought and if you have a receipt or other proof of purchase.
Customers who show proof of buying between 50 and 100 individually weighted or bagged items during the settlement period will receive payouts ranging from $10 to $25. If you can prove your purchases during this time, you can claim 2% of the total cost of the items you bought, with a maximum payout of $500 per person.
The FAQ section on the settlement website explains that the compensation each person gets depends on how many claims are filed.
The total settlement amount is $45 million. If there are many valid claims, each person’s amount might increase or decrease based on the number of people qualifying. Also, extra distributions may be added later.
If you think you should get compensation from Walmart for eligible purchases made during this time, you can file a claim online or by mail. If you don’t have a receipt or proof of purchase for specific items, you might be able to find receipts on Walmart’s official website.

Even though Walmart has agreed to a large lawsuit settlement, the company has consistently denied any wrongdoing and continues to do so. A Walmart spokesperson stated, “We will keep offering low prices to help customers save money on the products they need. Although we deny the allegations, we believe settling is in the best interest of both parties.”
To receive compensation from the settlement, you need to submit all your claims by June 5. Most payments will be made electronically using Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or a pre-paid MasterCard. If you can’t use these electronic methods, you can ask for a paper check instead.
