Yes! NASA is teaming up with Netflix to stream live space content this summer. This means that the rest of us here on Earth will be able to watch events like rocket launches, astronauts walking in space, and live views of the Earth. We will get front-row seats to this content from our TV or phone using Netflix.
NASA says it is doing this to help more people around the world see what they are working on. However, the content won’t be exclusive to Netflix. You can still watch all of it for free without ads on NASA’s own app and website, just like before. NASA+, NASA’s very own free streaming service, started in 2023. The goal of this streaming platform was to make space videos and updates easier for everyone to find.
Rebecca Sirmons, the general manager of NASA+, said that the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 includes a goal to share NASA’s adventures and space exploration story with as many people as possible. This goal is one of the major reasons why they are now teaming up with Netflix.
NASA did not disclose the financial details of this deal with Netflix. The partnership, however, comes at a time when space activity is really taking off. For example, Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, has already launched rockets 81 times in the first half of 2025.
Currently, SpaceX is the only American company permitted to transport astronauts to the International Space Station. Meanwhile, NASA is still working on missions that are closer to Earth, in what is called low-Earth orbit.
Netflix x NASA: Space Coming to Your Screen
Netflix teaming up with NASA to stream live space content means that we, Earthlings, will be able to watch real-time views of Earth from the International Space Station directly from our Netflix accounts. And yes, it will be included in the regular membership—no extra fees.
NASA and Netflix both announced this on Monday, June 30; however, they did not specify the exact date it will start. More details about the shows and streaming schedule will be released closer to the launch date. But they have not yet announced which countries will have access to the service.
Since NASA’s goal is to share its space adventures with more people, partnering with Netflix might be a smart move. Netflix has more than 700 million users around the world, which will help give NASA a much bigger audience. The streaming platform has also been doing very well lately. Its stock is at a record high, and it has gone up by almost 51% since the beginning of the year.
Rebecca Sirmons said teaming up with Netflix is a big step in achieving its goal. “We are entering a new ‘Golden Age’ of space and science, and now, anyone with a phone or TV can join in,” she said.
This partnership is big for the U.S space agency. NASA has already created videos on topics like astronauts, airplanes, space history, and satellite launches. They also live stream big events, like when satellites are sent into space. However, while they have always created and shared these space videos on their website and social media, Netflix gives them the chance to reach a much larger audience, in the comfort of their own homes.
Netflix, on the other hand, has also started adding different types of content. For example, in January last year, they bought the exclusive rights to show WWE’s Raw, a popular weekly wrestling show. And now, with its new streaming deal with NASA, a new type of content will be available.
