Controversy Erupts Over California School District’s All-Electric Bus Fleet

Climate advocates have been singing the praises of an electric bus initiative for schools in California. Yes, the all-electric school bus fleet is the first of its kind in the United States. However, some Californians could only care less about its novelty. In the opinion of these disagreeing folks, California and its major energy supplier, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), are not getting their priorities right.

The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is the first to enjoy the full deployment of the Zūm electric buses. Zūm seems to be adopting a climate-friendly mandate, the same that birthed the chain of Volkswagen electric buses. District administrators and parents have embraced the development of green solutions. However, criticisms of the all-electric school bus fleet have gained much traction online. However, the critics have little or no jabs for the electric bus manufacturer, Zūm, not so for PG&E.

Zūm and PG&E partnered with the OUSD to make the first full deployment of an all-electric school bus fleet possible. So, several Californians took to X to troll PG&E’s announcement of the electric bus program in OUSD. One of the X users said in response to the announcement, “Please stop, and work on lowering rates.” This comment refers to recent hikes in energy rates by PG&E and other energy suppliers in the US.

Another concern raised online by critics of the electric bus cost for the OUSD is the proliferation of energy rations. Another X user, Rodget L. Nelson, wrote, “In a state that has to ask people to not use AC or charge their EVs during peak hours because there’s not enough power. Too funny for words.” Apparently, power rationing has been an issue in California districts in recent times. So, residents are not entirely comfortable with Zūm placing an entire fleet of electric school buses on the grid.

Of course, the electric bus manufacturer has tried to allay fears of impending energy deficits courtesy of the bus fleet. Zūm explained that their electric buses come with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. This technology allows the vehicles’ batteries to send energy back to the grid during non-operational periods. The 74 all-electric school buses now operating in OUSD are outfitted with a bidirectional charger. The AI-enabled Virtual Power Plant (VPP) serves as a charger for the bus and an energy source for the grid.

In addition, some of the commenters called attention to the recent EV sale slumps. They opine that this might be a sign of the beginning of the end for the EV industry. Another X user also pointed out the lack of EV chargers in California relative to the increasing number of electric vehicles. The X user said in response to the news of the electric school bus fleet, “No one wants to sit hours while your car charges! If you can FIND a charger that WORKS!”

Political Perspectives On Electric Bus Deployment in the Oakland Unified School District

Several objective highlights have been made on the benefits of green technology and how it can benefit the populace. However, discussions about adopting electric vehicles often degenerate into bipartisan criticism sessions.

Sometimes, such discussions lose their objective perspective as a means of solving problems for the greater good of humanity. Instead, the EV discussion is often exploited as a political appendage. Another X user suggests an urgent need to revamp the narrative being taught to students about their outlook on life. The commenter suggests that there might be a need to depoliticize our educational system.

    EVs Help Those With Disabilities

Despite the unrelenting criticism of some lapses of the all-electric school bus initiative, the Superintendent of the California school district points to one of its benefits that he claims is impervious to gainsaying.

The OUSD superintendent, Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammel, declared that EVs will help increase the attendance of students with disabilities. He explained that the buses deployed to the OUSD have features that offer special needs students ease of use. In addition, Dr. Johnson-Trammel said, “By trying to do our part of not trying to put so much pollution out there, we are taking responsibility of trying to produce and model. We need cleaner air, particularly for the most vulnerable.”

    Historic Milestone Reached

Ritu Narayan, founder of Zūm, commented that deploying 74 electric buses to schools in the OUSD is a historic milestone. According to Narayan, this would be the first time that all the buses operating in a US community would be fully electric. The executive also said, “Electric school buses with V2G capability create cleaner transportation and send untapped energy from bus batteries back to the grid. It’s a win-win for children, families, schools and drivers.”
