Interestingly, when an inheritance is involved, the dynamics of the old-parent-adult-ward relationship tend to follow a predictable trend. Entitled children hang around the fizzled grandparents to get a bite of the old block.
How the Death of a Grandmother Unsettled a Family
Such was the scenario that played out upon the demise of an old woman. In the last years of her life, this woman was cared for by her granddaughter, Wendy Jones. On the contrary, Wendy Jones’s half-brother, Eddie, was aloof to the needs of his frail grandmother.
It was almost as if Eddie was not interested in identifying with the old woman as she battled the many health complications of old age.
The Jones Enjoyed the Best Care in Old Age
Families sometimes send their aged parents to care homes for what they believe is round-the-clock care. However, the old woman in this piece was well-to-do, and her family hired a caregiver.
However, with time, her health deteriorated, and the caregiver became overwhelmed.

Wendy Jones decided to move in with her right after graduating from college to provide the aged grandmother with extra care and much-needed filial love. The young lady sacrificed for her aged grandmother out of empathy and pure love.

Not long after the old grandmother died, the will reading brought the extended family together and revealed that Wendy would be receiving a few insignificant items. However, it was a surprise that no one in the family received the house, supposedly the largest possession of their grandmother.
This was a shocking realization for the entire family, as everyone had looked forward to knowing who would get the property.
The Not-so-filial Relationship of Two Siblings
Wendy and Eddie Jones are children of the same father but different mothers. However, Eddie has always isolated himself from the family until it was time for his grandmother’s funeral and the reading of the will.
Eddie is 10 years older than Wendy and never liked her as she was the product of their dad’s post-divorce relationship. He naturally grew resentful when his dad married Wendy’s mother.
Young Girls Often Dote on Their Elder Brothers
On the contrary, young Wendy was fond of the idea of having an older brother but would have none of it. Despite all his little sister’s efforts, Eddie brushed aside her love and compassion.
Wendy gave up on trying to win Eddie over to her side after their father’s demise. At the funeral, he gave an eulogy in which he sidestepped, acknowledging Wendy as a member of the family.
Leaving a Place Where You’re Not Wanted
At the threshold of an emotional door slam, Wendy disconnected from Eddie and stopped actively trying to make his acquaintance. Before long, the gash between them rapidly grew into a chasm.
So, to fill up the space left unoccupied by Eddie in her heart, Wendy drew even closer to her mom and grandmother, prompting her to live with the aged woman after college.
The Filling Up of an Empty Chasm
Wendy and her grandmother had grown so close that when the aged woman eventually passed, it left a smarting sore in her heart. However, Wendy consoled herself with the lovely memories she shared with her grandmother.
Wendy and Eddie saw each other again, after several years of disconnect, at grandma’s burial. However, the duo hardly acknowledged each other.

The Unbundling of an Incomplete Will
At the will reading, the lawyer reads to everyone how the deceased woman recommended that her possessions be split between her three successors—Wendy, her mom, and Eddie.
During the reading, Eddie was appalled that the lawyer said nothing of his grandmother’s house. To the shock of everyone present, the lawyer disclosed that their grandma had sold the house several years ago and is not hers to give.
An Ever-abiding Streak of Empathy
Eddie left the will-reading angrily after learning his grandmother’s house had fallen out of the family’s possession. Meanwhile, Wendy and her mom kept wondering who the new owner of the house was.
That evening, Wendy started packing her belongings to leave the house before the new owner came around to affirm their ownership.
The Good Turn Comes Around
However, that same evening, the next door neighbor to Wendy’s grandmother came visiting. Wendy appreciated her neighbor’s presence at her grandma’s funeral and offered her some tea.
Before leaving, the neighbour handed Wendy the house’s sale deeds. Her grandmother made the neighbor buy the house while she was alive, with the condition that it be transferred to Wendy after her death.
