Have you ever done something simply because you felt guilty or owed someone something? This young man married his wife because of that feeling. Her family raised him, gave him thousands of dollars worth of gifts, and gave him a good future.
He had no way to repay them for all their kindness, so when their daughter fell head over heels in love with him, he decided to marry her and take care of her as a sort of ‘repayment.’
The Beginning
According to his narration on Reddit, it all started when this man was a little boy. The little boy came from a nonchalant, cold home and didn’t know love. This continued until the age of 11 when he met a little girl in school who would change his life forever.
At that age, his family moved to a new city, and he had to transfer schools. As a lonely and neglected child, he never had anyone in his corner in his previous years.
Meeting the Girl
However, everything changes when he meets this little girl in school. She was constantly bullied but still had a nice, awkward, and sweet personality. He defends her from the bullies at school and becomes her hero after he successfully stops the bullying from happening again.
Then, they became fast friends and spent a lot of time together. She became his only friend, and this little boy was no longer lonely.
Meeting Her Family
Naturally, he also met her family. Unlike him, the girl came from a very loving and kind family. They were close-knit and cared deeply for each other, which was even reflected in the way the girl looked, spoke, and acted.
Her family life was the polar opposite of that of the boy, and this was quite obvious. However, her family welcomed him with open arms and made him feel very loved.

Making Him Family
He was a good kid who lacked family love but still cared for their daughter and saved her from bullies in school. So, it was unsurprising that her family took him under their wing and cared for him in return.
He became a part of their family and hung out at those hours almost every day. He ate, played, and read at their place, and even though her family was just her mum and aunt, they treated him like one of their own.
Giving Gifts
Once again, the girl’s family was quite wealthy. Therefore, they gave him access to many things his parents couldn’t. They gave him clothes, video games, food, gifts, and many other things that he would otherwise never have gotten.
During special days and holidays, he would go to their house and stay until night. During Christmas, he was given gifts just like other family members and made to feel very special.
Teenage Years
The boy and girl grew up together, and he started to notice something during their teenage years. His friend had a massive crush on him. However, he chose to ignore this and treat her normally to avoid awkward things.
He also said he didn’t want to ruin their friendship or have her family stop treating him well. So, he decided they would remain friends and never talked to her about her feelings for him.
Things Changed
By high school, the girl was no longer shy and less awkward. She grew into a beautiful young woman and had more confidence than she did in her earlier years. While he acknowledged this, he still did not feel romantic love towards her.
He only felt platonic love toward her, and she was a great friend to him. He deeply valued her as a friend, and they were still just as close as they were before.
$40,000 in the Mix
According to the now-husband’s narration, the family has only ever given him gifts, food, or small bits of cash before. However, everything changed as they got older. When he was 17, he got his driver’s license but did not have money for a car.
Without asking him, the girl’s mother surprised her daughter and him with cars worth $40,000 each! He was quite surprised as he hadn’t expected it and was also very happy with this great gift.

$60,000 for College
Later that same year, she did another great thing by paying his $60,000 college tuition when he mentioned that he wasn’t attending college due to the high cost. While he wasn’t asking her for it, she insisted on paying to ensure he had the proper education to make it in life.
They also never expected anything from him in return, which made the husband feel quite guilty. At this time, his wife’s family had given him $100,000 in just one year.
Marriage from Guilt
He continued to feel guilty and started to think of ways to repay her family for the great things they have done for him since he was just 11 years old. So, that was when he thought about marrying their daughter.
From his narration, their daughter’s crush had developed into real love, and even though he didn’t feel that way, he thought marrying her and taking care of her would make up for all the good things they’d done for him for free.
Marrying Their Daughter
When he showed romantic interest in her, the daughter leaped at the chance, and they started dating. As of 2024, they were together for 10 years and married four years ago. He performs his husbandly duties towards her, cares for her, and loves her but hasn’t felt like he is in love with her.
He still only views his wife as a partner and great friend but has no deep romantic feelings towards her.
The Problem
If he has not been able to develop romantic feelings for her ten years after they got together, it is safe to say that he probably never will. So now, the problem is that he doesn’t know if he should tell her or not.
Even though they are quite happy and have a good relationship, he feels he only married her because he felt indebted to her family. Therefore, he feels even more guilty and is unsure of the next steps to take. Do you think he should tell the truth or continue to live with his wife in his “happy” marriage?
