Berkshire Hathaway, the company led by Warren Buffett, now holds more Treasury bills than the U.S. Federal Reserve does. Warren Buffet is one of the world’s wealthiest people, so this might not be too surprising. The company is getting the treasury bills because Buffett is accumulating a substantial amount of cash.

What Does Warren Buffett Own the Most Of?

Warren Buffett, through his company, Berkshire Hathaway, based in Omaha, Nebraska, owns the most in short-term Treasury bills, with an investment of $234.6 billion. By the end of the second quarter, the company had invested $234.6 billion in short-term Treasury bills.

It also had over $42 billion in cash and other assets that are equivalent to cash, including Treasury bills that would be cashed in within three months. This is according to the company’s financial report for the quarter. Meanwhile, as of July 31, the Federal Reserve owned $195.3 billion worth of Treasury bills.

Warren Buffet’s Recent Move in the Stock Market

Warren Buffett, the 93-year-old billionaire investor, made a smart decision by selling large amounts of his stocks, including Apple, in the last few months. This move was unexpected, but it proved to be wise because it happened just before a major global stock market decline.

Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway, has been selling off stocks for seven quarters in a row. However, in the most recent quarter, Buffett sold even more stocks. In total, he has sold over $75 billion worth of stocks.

    Buying Treasury Bills

Some of Warren Buffett’s most devoted followers saw his choice to sell off his biggest investments as a sign. They believed that he was worried about the economy and the stock market.

The Oracle of Omaha has said before that when things are uncertain, he might choose to buy Treasury bills, which are short-term loans to the government. These bills can be bought for periods between four weeks and a year.

What Did Warren Buffett Buy Recently?

Warren Buffett recently bought treasury bills. He was uncertain about the stock market, so he followed his advice and bought Treasury bills. Buffet has a considerable amount of cash that has been yielding more returns. This is because Treasury yields have gone up recently.

If he invests $200 billion in short-term Treasury bills that earn about 5% interest, he would make around $10 billion a year. This means Warren Buffet will make approximately $2.5 billion every three months.

    The Federal Reserve

However, the U.S. Federal Reserve has been reducing these holdings in a process called quantitative tightening since June 2022.

The Federal Reserve works to keep the job market strong and also ensure prices are stable by making decisions about how much money is in the economy. It does this by buying and selling government bonds, which helps to manage how much money is available and what interest rates will be.

    Who Founded Berkshire Hathaway?

Berkshire Hathaway’s history dates back to the early 19th century. Oliver Chance originally founded it as a textile manufacturing company in 1839. In 1965, Warren Buffett, a successful investor, gained control of Berkshire Hathaway through his investment partnership. At first, the Oracle of Omaha wanted to use the company as a holding for his investments. But as time passed, he shifted the focus from textiles to something else. He started acquiring and managing a wide range of businesses and investments.

Under Buffett’s leadership, Berkshire Hathaway went from a textile manufacturing company into a major conglomerate. It expanded into insurance, utilities, manufacturing, and retail sectors. He also started acquiring significant stakes in various large public companies.
