The race to become the world’s first trillionaire is one of the most exciting narratives in modern finance. Generations ago, many Americans dreamed of becoming millionaires, but in 2024, there are close to 22 million of them in the United States alone. These days, you have to be a billionaire to get noticed.

With the wealthiest people breaking record after record, many are curious as to who will become the first trillionaire. Given the growing number of billionaires in the fields of business, technology, space exploration and entertainment, it may not take long for the world to witness its first trillionaire.

Who, though, is going to pull off this incredible achievement first?

    Who Is a Trillionaire?

In simple terms, a trillionaire is someone whose net worth is at least one trillion in U.S. dollars or a similarly valued currency, like the euro or the British pound. One trillion is a one followed by twelve zeros: $1,000,000,000,000 when expressed in numbers.

Since one billion is equivalent to one thousand million, the wealth of a trillionaire would be one thousand billion. Although there aren’t any trillionaires at the moment, this might quickly change given the speed at which industries like technology, banking, and space exploration are developing.

    How to Become a Trillionaire

A trillion dollars is only shy of Mexico’s GDP, a figure so enormous it goes beyond imagination. Apple, on the other hand, recently became the first US-listed company with a market value of $1 trillion.

The question now is, how long will it be before someone reaches the same milestone, and what will they have to do to get so filthy rich? To even begin approaching trillionaire status, several key factors come into play:

    • Dominating Major Industries: Today’s billionaires have become rich through various business successes in sectors such as energy, finance, or technology. However, to become a trillionaire, one would probably have to control a substantial number of industries with extraordinary growth potential rather than just one.

    • Innovation and Market Disruption: It’s very likely that the first trillionaire will be an inventor who produces something of value that will dramatically change the world. These disruptions will open the doors to new markets, offering a great deal of potential.

    • Strategic Investments: It is important to invest in many types of profitable industries as it can greatly increase the net worth. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett, for instance, have greatly increased their wealth by making early investments in transformative companies. A trillionaire would need to be able to expand investments and have vision for emerging markets.

    • Global Impact: A trillionaire would need to operate on a global level. They would probably manage companies that impact global markets, potentially entering industries that shape the lives of people globally, including healthcare, infrastructure, or environmental industries.

Who Will Be the First Trillionaire?
A Selected Few in the Race for Trillionaire Status

John D. Rockefeller was the first billionaire in history, and he achieved this status in 1916 after acquiring Standard Oil. Since then, more than a century ago, wealth has increased to the point where the world’s richest people have fortunes exceeding $200 billion.

While no one has reached the rank of trillionaire status yet, there are several contenders who might claim the title of the first trillionaire.

    • Elon Musk: The enigmatic business magnate, Elon Musk, who created SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink, is among those expected to be the first trillionaire in history. His current net worth is said to be $248 billion but could be even more in the near future.
    • Jeff Bezos: Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon has also been considered as a potential candidate for the first trillionaire. Currently, his net worth is $218 billion, and even after he has left the position of CEO of Amazon, he still earns from the stocks he owns in the company and other businesses.

    • Bernard Arnault: LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault, a luxury goods tycoon with a net worth of $233 billion (ÂŁ185 billion), has rapidly climbed the ranks of the world’s richest people. His empire includes hundreds of luxury brands in wine, cosmetics, fashion, and more. Arnault has a chance to become the first trillionaire if he can continue to grow and manage his empire in international markets.
    • Mark Zuckerberg: Being the founder of Meta (formerly Facebook), Mark Zuckerberg has already established his status as a tech millionaire. Zuckerberg’s net worth of $181 billion could grow more with investments in virtual reality, AI, and Metaverse, which could make him a trillionaire.
    • Bill Gates: Gates is known to have donated a significant percentage of his wealth to charity through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. But he still has a total net worth of $157 billion. Gates began investing early in Microsoft, and he has a diversified portfolio which makes him one of the potential trillionaires.

    How to Calculate Net Worth

It is necessary to understand how net worth is arrived at, before looking at how these contenders could become trillionaires. Net worth is the total value of all a person’s assets minus their liabilities. For someone like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, this includes their shares in their businesses, houses, cars, and other investments.

Here’s a simple formula for calculating net worth:
Net worth = Total Assets minus Total Liabilities

In the case of billionaires, their worth is often closely linked to the stock of the companies that they own. This is because their businesses expand, their stock prices go up, and their worth goes up in equal measure.

This is why Elon Musk, Bezos, and Zuckerberg have seen tremendous growth in their wealth within the last couple of years due to the growth of their companies.

When Will the First Trillionaire Happen?

The big question remains: when will the first trillionaire happen? Given the advancements in technology and space exploration, some financial analysts predict that the first trillionaire will be made within the next decade.

It will take a combination of innovation, industry dominance and strategic investments to become the first trillionaire in history.

Although it’s unclear when we’ll witness this major milestone as we are living in a period of extraordinary wealthy generation. The first trillionaire could very well be anyone or someone currently among the richest people in the world.
