On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, Xpeng, a leading Chinese electric vehicle EV manufacturer, made headlines after announcing the launch of the Chinese EV car, Mona M03, the company’s new mass-market electric vehicle. The electric car price is under $20,000, with specific models for less than $17,000.
This vehicle offers basic driver-assist features, making it one of the most affordable EVs today. Xpeng’s decision to release an affordable and technologically advanced vehicle marks a significant step toward making electric cars more accessible to the average buyer, especially with the global transition toward electric mobility rising.
The Mona M03 not only undercuts the competition on pricing but also promises to deliver quality, safety, and innovation, which aligns with Xpeng’s broader vision of making intelligent electric vehicles available to everyone.
With this launch, Xpeng is positioned to take on established brands like Tesla, which has long dominated the EV market. Now, let’s explore what makes the Mona M03 a game-changer in the EV industry.
The Basic Version of the Mona M03 Electric Coupe
The Mona M03 is designed as a compact electric coupe that appeals to various buyers, especially those looking for an affordable entry into the electric vehicle market. Despite its low price rate, the Mona M03 does not compromise on quality or essential features.
The basic Mona M03 electric coupe will cost 119,800 yuan ($16,812) and have a driving range of 515 kilometers (320 miles). The EV car has a minimalist interior, a sophisticated infotainment system, and basic driver-assist features. These include lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
The Mona M03 is a compelling choice for first-time EV buyers since these features, previously only available on higher-end models, are now accessible in a budget-friendly package. The EV car also has a competitive range, going about 200 miles on a single charge, making it ideal for short road trips and city commuting.
The Mona M03’s sleek design and compact size make it perfect for city driving, as the standard driver-assist supports parking and parallel parking. Xpeng says it uses various automatic sensors, including cameras, light detection, and ranging sensors. Additionally, its electric drivetrain ensures a quiet and smooth driving experience, a feature unique to EV cars.
The Max version of driver assist includes features like automatically backing up a car to a designated position in a dead-end street with the push of a single button. Since presales of the Mona M03 began on Aug. 8th, mass deliveries have been set to start any time after the launch.
While the Max version is set to begin deliveries after the Lunar New Year holiday in 2025, considering that the Chinese holiday runs from late January to early February next year.
Partnering With Didi
In August 2023, Xpeng built the Mona EV car using tech acquired from Didi, a ride-hailing company. Wu Zhefeng, a Mona project manager, told reporters Monday, August 19, 2024, just before the launch, that Didi created the basic version of driver-assist technology in the M03, while Xpeng created the more advanced version.
Wu stated that while the battery is the most expensive component of an electric car, Xpeng was able to lower the price for Mona in part due to efforts to boost energy efficiency. Wu says the coupe is powered by BYD’s popular “blade battery.”
He also mentioned that the brand is focused on young people two or three years after graduation. He claims that nearly half of similar cars in China within this price range are used for ride-hailing.
While BYD and other electric car manufacturers have collaborated with Didi to market their vehicles to drivers on the ride-hailing platform, Wu stated that Mona will continue to focus on individual drivers.

Xpeng Is Expanding the Infrastructure of EV Charging Stations
As more affordable electric vehicles like the Mona M03 enter the market, an adequate EV charging network becomes increasingly important. Xpeng recognizes this and has actively expanded EV charging stations across China.
The company has invested in creating a fast-charging station network, which is essential for reducing charging times and making electric vehicles more convenient for daily use.
In addition to its own charging stations, Xpeng has partnered with other companies to provide Mona M03 owners with access to a broader network of EV charging stations. This ensures that drivers can locate charging stations easily, whether they are in cities or traveling long distances.

Xpeng’s Mona M03 vs. Tesla Car Model 3
When comparing Xpeng’s Mona M03 with Tesla’s Model 3, it’s important to consider the value each EV offers. The Tesla Model 3 is known for its performance, range, and advanced features like Autopilot. However, it comes at a higher cost, so not all customers may be able to afford it.
The Mona M03, on the other hand, offers a more basic but highly functional experience at a much lower price. For buyers who prioritize affordability over advanced features, the Mona M03 presents a compelling option. It is designed for everyday use, with emphasis on practicality and cost-effectiveness.
While many aspire to own the Tesla Model 3, the Mona M03 opens the EV market to a new group of buyers who may not have previously been interested in it.
Electric Vehicles and the Future of Transportation
The introduction of the Mona M03 marks a massive shift as Xpeng releases mass-market EV cars, reflecting the company’s long-term vision. With an affordable offering, Xpeng is positioning itself to capture a significant share of the global EV market by targeting a broader demographic.
As the EV market evolves, it will be interesting to see how other manufacturers react to the challenge posed by affordable models like the Mona M03. The competition will likely spark future developments in technology, affordability, and efficiency, which will benefit both buyers and the environment.
