Athletic Brewing is at the forefront, leading a significant transformation in the beer industry. The brand is leading the revolution in non-alcoholic beer, demonstrating that you can enjoy a delicious beer without drinking alcohol, thanks to recent $50 million funding.

Let’s explore the key role played by Athletic Brewing and why beer lovers worldwide fall in love with this movement.

    Where it All Started

Athletic Brewing started its nonalcoholic craft brewing facilities in 2018 and has since expanded to rank the 10th largest craft brewery in the United States and 20th largest overall U.S. brewing company, despite solely providing nonalcoholic alternatives, according to Brewers Association rankings.

According to NielsenIQ data, athletic accounts for 32% of the growth in the nonalcoholic beer category overall and has a market share of over 19% in the nonalcoholic beer segment.

    A New Wave in Brewing

Non-alcoholic beer is no longer boring and uninspiring. Athletic Brewing is leading the way, delivering more flavor, quality, and variety than rival alcoholic beers. Bill Shufelt and John Walker, two visionaries, founded the company to create great non-alcoholic beers accessible to all.

Their goal is uncomplicated: to create a delicious beer that suits every diet and way of life. Consumers seeking mindful drinking options who are also health-conscious are finding resonance with this vision.

    The $50 Million Boost

The company raised an additional $50 million in equity funding in a round led by General Atlantic; this was disclosed in July 2024. With the current investment, the brewer intends to address the growing demand from consumers for nonalcoholic beer by expanding its options at international retailers and boosting production capacity.

The company said, “We are passionate about transforming the way modern adults drink and converting critics into believers. We’re at the start of a long-term trend, and we couldn’t be more excited to have General Atlantic by our side as Athletic begins its next phase of growth.”

Significant Investment Signals Growing Market Potential

Athletic Brewing’s latest $50 million funding round demonstrates both the brand’s success and the growing market for non-alcoholic beverages. This investment will increase the company’s production capacity, drive product innovation, and broaden its client base under the direction of J.J. Watt and Justin Tuck of the NFL, Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS, and TRB Advisors.

This financial backing aims to make non-alcoholic beer a more popular option for customers by highlighting the market’s potential and validating Athletic Brewing’s objective.

Athletic Brewing’s Valuation Soars to $800 Million

According to a July 2024 Wall Street Journal report, the company’s valuation doubled with the most recent funding and is now at $800 million. The company presently operates two brewing plants in the United States: one located in San Diego and the other in Milford, Connecticut.

Athletic just announced that it has acquired a third American brewing facility in San Diego. Once it’s operational, the company anticipates that the plant will help double its capacity for brewing beer in the United States.

    Athletic Brewing’s Impressive Growth

The company’s nonalcoholic beverage success among consumers can be primarily attributed to growing health and wellness trends. “We sold well over 3 million cases, over 100 million cans, and did over $90 million in revenue last year as a company, and we are growing well above that this year,” Shufelt stated.

According to new statistics from NCSolutions, over 40% of Americans reveal they are actively trying to reduce their consumption of alcohol in 2024. The data shows that when millennials and Generation Z are surveyed, that number rises to 49% and 61%, respectively.

Major Beer Brands Join the Non-Alcoholic Trend

Popular beer companies, like Heineken, Corona (owned by Constellation Brands), Anheuser-Busch’s Budweiser, and even Diageo’s Guinness, have jumped on the trend and began producing nonalcoholic beer of their own.

Shufelt stated, “We want to give people beer they can drink seven nights a week and feel good about.” He further said, “We’ve invested over $100 million in our manufacturing, which has really differentiated quality that this segment has never seen before.”

    The Athletic Brewing Difference

Athletic Brewing sets itself apart with an unwavering dedication to quality and innovation. Their beers are made with premium components, including yeast, hops, and malt, carefully chosen to produce rich, full-bodied flavors.

In response to the prevalent critique of the narrow selection of non-alcoholic beers, Athletic Brewing provides a wide array of choices, such as IPAs, golden ales, stouts, and lagers. Their products are easily accessible to all customers, as they can be bought in retail stores nationwide and online.

    Commitment to Innovation and Community

Athletic Brewing’s unwavering commitment to innovation—constantly experimenting with tastes and brewing techniques—drives its success. This has produced beers that earn awards and have a dedicated consumer base.

In addition to brewing, the company supports environmental causes by promoting eco-friendly methods and contributing 2% of sales to cleanups through its “Two for the Trails” project. The company also promotes community by interacting with consumers via social media, hosting events, and forming alliances that support healthy living.
