Are you tired of paying too much for drinks at restaurants? A couple discovered a cool money-saving trick to save money on beverages while dining out. Their clever idea was shared in a TikTok video that went viral. The video was posted by Hadassah Moore (@hadassahmoore99), and it has already racked up over 541,000 views in just two days!
In the video, a message was overlaid, and it said, “We save money by sharing one refillable drink when we eat out.” In the video, you can see a couple enjoying their drinks at a restaurant. Moore, who uploaded the video, posted it with a location that read “Tennessee.” However, she explained to her hosts in a recent interview that it was not filmed in Tennessee. She said the video was taken at a place called At Long Last in Auburn in New York. Moore further said, “My husband and I shared a cup of coffee and got one free refill because it made more sense than getting two cups of coffee for double the price.”
This post comes as the U.S. consumer price index for non-alcoholic beverages increased. The consumer price index, which is the average change in prices consumers pay for goods and services, increased by 3.4%. This price index increased over the last year between January 2023 and January 2024, according to a report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
During this period, the cost of eating out increased by 5.1%. According to the BLS report, the index or price for limited-service and full-service meals increased by 5.8%. Sit-down meals went up by 4.3%. A survey from March 2022 showed that 35 percent of people think restaurant prices are okay. On the other hand, 20 percent believe they’re not so great, according to data from Statista.
The video, which has gone viral, shows Moore and her husband sitting at a table in a New York restaurant. They each have their own drink. Moore, who works as a server in Skaneateles, a town in central New York, said they often carried their own drinks. She explained that they took their own drinks to restaurants because they didn’t drink much. Moore also explained that as a server herself, she doesn’t mind when guests do it, either. She doesn’t mind since it doesn’t affect her much. “I couldn’t care less if guests did this. The $3 on the bill makes no difference to me. In this case, we gave the $3 we saved to our server in her tip,” she said.
“Honestly, I don’t know how much the coffee costs at that place in the video; I was just kidding around. But where I work, drinks are $2.99.
People on TikTok praised the money-saving trick. They liked the idea of saving money, and some even said they were already doing the same thing. Trendy New You commented, ‘Wow, that’s really clever,’ and user @menopekiengle added, ‘Yeah, it’s smart to get a small drink and get refills instead of a large one.'”
Many TikTok users were surprised and excited about the new idea. ANE+CNE commented, saying, “Oh wow. I can’t believe I never thought of that.”
Lex, another TikToker, also said: “Why have I never thought to do this? Omg!.” Brittany Wanderlust also posted, “Lolll, we started doing this too!” Another user said, “I actually do that!” while another one said, “Same here, not with this economy.”
