    Southwest Airlines updates baggage policy.

Southwest Airlines used to be popular for letting people check their bags for free. In March, they made an announcement that it would no longer be free. The perk will be ending for most passengers.

The company has implemented this new law because, as of May 28, most travelers now pay to check their first and second bags.

The company’s CEO, Bob Jordan, stated that the new rule represents a significant change for Southwest Airlines. He explained that the airline needs to generate more revenue and attract a wider range of customers.

Why the New Policy Was Put In Place

Southwest Airlines has a major goal of improving how it does business and making more revenue. Changing its baggage policy is just part of a larger plan to meet customer expectations today and stay competitive with other airlines. The company hopes these changes will help it earn about $4 billion.

CEO Bob Jordan explained that travelers today want more options. A change in consumer behavior occurred after the pandemic changed how people traveled. He said that charging fees for bags is not just about making money; it’s also about ensuring that the service is sustainable. It is also about giving travelers more choices.

Jordan also said that, even though change can be difficult and emotional, it does not have to hurt anyone. The airline is trying to balance what customers, workers, and investors all need. He pointed out that almost all the other airlines already charge for checked bags. Southwest Airlines is just catching up with the rest of the industry.

In an interview with the New York Times, the CEO was asked if Southwest’s new baggage policy could benefit loyal customers more than people who do not fly Southwest often. Bob Jordan explained that the airline still plans to offer low prices for everyone.

He also added that this change is just the beginning of Southwest’s new strategy. They still want to stay true to what makes them special. The company will still have friendly staff, great service, and reasonable prices while making adjustments to better serve modern travelers.

    Southwest Airlines vs. Other Competitors

Southwest Airlines used to stand out because it was the only big U.S. airline that allowed everyone to check two bags for free. But now, that is changing. Southwest is starting to charge passengers for checked bags, just like other airlines, such as American, Delta, and United Airlines.

If you book a flight with Southwest after May 28, you will have to pay $35 to check your first bag and $45 for your second bag. As a traveler, you can pay that amount as long as the bags are not too big or heavy.

However, some people will still get free bags. If you buy a more expensive ticket (Business Select), you can check two bags for free. If you are a part of Southwest’s top loyalty group, that is, the A-List Preferred, you can also check two bags for free.

If you have a regular A-List status or a Southwest credit card, you can check one bag for free.

Southwest Airlines says it will keep updating how it runs its business. This means more changes might be coming. Changes like new ticket options or updates to its rewards program.
