It is common for grocery shoppers to visit their favorite store with a list. However, they are less likely to stick to it if they shop at Aldi. Why this is so may come as a surprise.

Apparently, all Aldi outlets have a bespoke aisle—just one—from which shoppers on a strict budget have to steer clear.

How to Navigate Aldi Aisle of Shame

That one special aisle at the store outlets is called Aldi Finds and all too often tempts shoppers to make unintended purchases because of its attractive deals. However, customers familiar with that aspect of the grocery store have coined a new name for it — the Aisle of Shame.

The best solution to navigating this aisle of shame is always to set a spending limit and stick to it.

What Is the Middle Aisle in Aldi Called?

The aisle of shame is usually situated in the middle of the store, making it a center of attraction. It is said that items displayed on the aisle of shame often account for about 20% of the retail chain’s sales figures.

The items usually placed on the aisle of shame have no particular niche. In fact, the only commonality these items have is that they are all discounted. So, a shopper may find home furnishings, snacks, and entirely different items in the infamous aisle the following day.

Buying Groceries at a Supermarket Can Be a Win

Another way to sidestep the temptation of buying what you didn’t budget for after losing the battle to eye-popping offers is to check out Aldi’s Aisle of Shame Facebook community before your next grocery shopping trip.

The Aldi’s Aisle of Shame Facebook community has about three million followers. So, joining the community and dropping by just before each visit to the supermarket may help shoppers gain a few insights about the aisle of shame.

If You Know What To Expect on the Aisle of Shame, Temptation Is Eliminated

Groceries on the aisle of shame are sometimes irresistible because they are heavily discounted. In addition, shoppers’ knowledge that they may never encounter a deal that caught their attention on the aisle of shame often gladhands them into making the purchase, even if the item is not on the grocery list.

Once again, the advice is to know what is on sale in the aisle of shame before leaving home and sticking to your budget.

Making the Most of Best Deals at the Supermarket

So, shoppers who are familiar with the allure of the aisle of shame have learned to exploit it rather than fall victim.

One shopper described how well she has mastered the aisle of shame by saying, “When my friends come to my house, they don’t even ask me anymore where I’ve got some new things; they know it’s Aldi.”

    What Is Aldi Known For?

Aldi is a chain of retail stores well known for its low prices on groceries. Unlike other supermarkets, this retailer often sticks to essential groceries and staples. Instead of filling shopping aisles with multiple varieties of the same products.

So, to get the best deal on essential groceries, Aldi is the place to visit. However, the caveat is to stick to your shopping list and look the other way when a juicy offer beckons from the aisle of shame.

    A Die-Hard Discount Shopping Fan

Jeanette Hurt has been a long-time customer of Aldi and buys most of her groceries there. Indeed, she is so familiar with the retail chain that she has written a book of Aldi recipes.

Hurt recommends visiting your local store early to get the best deals available for that day. She even went as far as making an acquaintance of the clerks at the Aldi store in her neighborhood.

The Secret Behind Aldi’s Mark Down Policy

Now, the gist of Aldi’s heavy discounts on some staples and groceries is that perishables like seafood, fish, and meat have to be sold a day before their sell-by date. If not sold by the end of the day, the items are taken off the shelf and discarded.

So, at the end of each work day, staff notes items close to their sell-by date, offers heavy discounts and moves them to the aisle of shame.

How to Get the Best Deals During Early Visits

However, visiting an Aldi store later in the day might mean missing out on the most attractive deals. Interestingly, the perishable items in the store get the highest markdowns, with fish and meat discounted by as much as 50%.

A customer who often finds time to visit the aisle of shame early enough explained that she got a whole organic chicken for $4!

So, the aisle of shame could be a lifesaver for a family that spends big on animal proteins. Simply visit their Facebook aisle of shame community early to know what’s up for grabs, and check if they have chicken breasts, chicken thighs, lamb cuts, or even whole chickens listed.

Shoppers could even buy more of those things they need, particularly the perishables, and store them in their home freezers for later.

What is the Aisle of Shame at Aldi’s?

The aisle of shame is a marketing ploy to break even on annual sales. So, the items are heavily discounted, not because they’re bad, but because Aldi wants to get it off their hands.

In some cases, the store is just out to sample how well customers welcome new-to-market products by placing them on the aisle of shame. If the response is good, they get moved to the traditional shelf.
