The latest new Huawei phone in 2024 is the Mate XT Ultimate Design. This new trifold phone dwarfs Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 official release. Do we hear you ask, “How?” That’s because Huawei’s new trifold Mate XR has already clocked 2.7 million pre-orders.
Huawei started accepting customer pre-orders for its new trifold phone on Saturday. Meanwhile, Apple is set to launch its latest series of iPhone 16 devices on Tuesday. Although Huawei announced earlier that it would launch a new product on Tuesday, the same day as Apple’s launch, it eventually did so two days earlier.
As it stands, the Chinese company has yet to name a price for Mate XT. However, official communications indicate the Huawei trifold will hit stores on September 20. Apple is no longer on the list of top five-selling smartphones in China. According to Canalys, all the top five smartphones sold in China in Q2 2024 are from local brands. That all-Chinese ranking of smartphone sales would be the first of its kind.
Canalys generated the top five smartphone lists by comparing the total shipments by each vendor. Huawei currently sits in fourth position on Canalys’ list of top five smartphone vendors for Q2 2024. The firm shared that Huawei shipped 10.6 million smartphones in the first quarter. Meanwhile, it was not in the top five list in the second quarter, with shipments of 10 million phones.
Huawei Launching a New Product
The 2.7 million pre-orders of the new Huawei phone 2024 are surprising. However, market watchers suggest that the number may jump after the Mate XT trifold phone arrives in stores. The enthusiasm that greeted the unveiling of the Mate XT was probably not expected by Huawei’s marketing section.
On September 7, Huawei customers got a demo glimpse at the new trifold design. In reaction to the innovative design and technology of the Mate XT, pre-orders hit 10,000 units in just a few hours. Social media users on China’s equivalent of X, Weibo, shared positive reviews of the new Huawei phone 2024. Indeed, some Weibo users suggest that the news of the iPhone 16 pales in excitement compared to the Mate XT trifold.
However, technology analysts suggest it may be too early to judge the quality of both new smartphone releases. Smartphone enthusiasts can tell little of a device’s functionality by how good it looks in a poster or promotional video. Similarly, some tech enthusiasts posit that the odds are naturally in Huawei’s favor to nail more sales in China than Apple.
However, reviewers have also credited the improved performance of Huawei devices in the global market to technological innovations. The trifold design pays credence to the Chinese company’s heavy investment in research and development. Apple, on the contrary, has stuck to its traditional form factor for new smartphone releases.
Indeed, Huawei’s latest phone, the 2024 spec, incorporates some of the newest technologies on any smartphone. For example, most of Huawei’s new releases support the 5G technology. Likewise, Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro and the new Mate XT trifold come with satellite communication capabilities.
Nonetheless, market watchers project that Apple will also steal some market share, even in China. The selling point as Apple launches AI iPhone would be the introduction of the A18 chip. This chip is expected to maximize AI capabilities and boost energy efficiency and processing power.

The Chinese Company Has Started Accepting Preorder
Some tech enthusiasts point to the interplay of geopolitics, patriotism, and innovation as the reason for Huawei’s recent performance in China. Remember, the Chinese company has been subject to recent sanctions in the US. This and other global challenges have recently left Huawei struggling to access advanced chip technologies.
Therefore, it is unsurprising that Chinese smartphone users have expressed patriotic empathy for their local brand. The massive response of Chinese smartphone users after the new Huawei phone’s 2024 release date is understandable.
However, we hope customers who pre-ordered the Mate XT don’t get disappointed. While popular brands like Huawei do not limit pre-order quantities, new products are sometimes offered in limited quantities. Also, besides the 2.7 million pre-orders at Huawei’s official retail outlets, some third-party outlets have commenced pre-orders. Huawei’s price list, and that of most third-party outlets, ranges from 20,000 to 30,000 yuan.
